Ukrainian exporters of agricultural products should consider opportunities to expand their markets, as the volumes that the European Union allows to enter are significantly limited compared to Ukraine's potential in growing crops.

This information was provided by First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotskyy during a televised speech. He noted that the EU intended to impose new restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural products, including a possible decision to suspend imports of certain products for 14 days. This mechanism is absolutely new in trade relations and differs from the usual quotas or restrictions. Time will tell whether it will be applied in practice, but its existence is already a fact.

"Indeed, sugar is on the list where restrictions can be imposed after the quota is reached. According to calculations, this is about 260,000 tonnes. When we look, for example, at sugar exports last year, the absolute majority, 90%+, was exported to the European Union. Already in March this year, more than 20% was exported to other countries - Middle East, Africa. In the first decade of April 2024, 40% of the sugar produced last season, Ukraine exported to other destinations. Again, to the Middle East and Africa," he said.

During discussions with European agriculture ministers, there were questions about wheat, but so far it is not included in the list of restrictions. However, the European Union decided to monitor supplies and analyse their volumes. Ukrainian corn will also come under control, although its export volumes have limited quotas, which are not critical because Ukraine can export more than these quotas.

"There is corn in limited quotas, but it is worth noting that in fact this restriction is not critical, as we can export more corn, given the rules that are outside the quotas," the deputy minister added.

Vysotskyy notes that there is time for exporters to expand their markets before the summer.
