The EU needs to improve trucks parking conditions to ensure safety and security for drivers and goods

Employers, trade unions and parking operators are calling on the European Commission (EC) to maintain its focus on the certification, modernization, construction and funding of safe and secure truck parking facilities in the EU over the next three years.
A common statement on securing funding for Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPA) in Europe from 2025 to 2027 was sent to EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valian from the IRU, the European Federation of Transport Workers (EFT) and the European Secure Parking Organization (ESPORG). They are also in favour of further improving and developing new, more sustainable and interconnected SSTPAs, contributing to a single European parking network.
"Road transport is the backbone of EU industry. Attracting and retaining skilled drivers is vital to the sustainability and efficiency of the sector. Ensuring minimum safety and sanitation standards in car parks is crucial to protect the health and well-being of professional drivers, thereby improving their working conditions and making the profession more attractive" - Raluca Marian, IRU Director of EU Advocacy
ESPORG CEO, Drik Penass, noted that improvements should include adapting the eligibility criteria, including information and education programmes, to ensure that all stakeholders, specific details of small investors, parking operators and road transport companies, have access to EU funding. Christina Tilling, EFT's Head of Land Transport, also emphasised that the European Commission's commitment to a long-term policy on high quality SSTPAs contributes significantly to improving working conditions and safety standards.
