Representatives of the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd report that large-scale refuelling of liquefied Bio-methane became possible after the relevant technical modernisation. For the first time, this type of alternative fuel was refuelled in the port of Rotterdam during a visit of the company's ship.

A total of 2,200 tonnes of liquefied Bio-methane was fuelled into the container ship. This was the first time this operation was carried out using the LNG bunkerer vessel Alice Cosulich, owned by Titan.

According to Hapag-Lloyd, the German-flagged Brussels Express was built in 2014 and is a New Panamax class vessel. Its carrying capacity is 15,000 TEU.

In fact, this situation can only be seen as a trial phase. The use of liquefied biogas on a large scale is possible only after changes in legislation and the creation of the appropriate infrastructure.

Liquefied bio-LNG or Bio-methane (LBM) is produced from food and agricultural waste. In some cases, this type of fuel provides almost zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, it all depends on the feedstock used to produce LBM.
