SOC or COC: Choosing a Container for Shipping

SOC or COC: Choosing a Container for Shipping

Container shipping requires a choice of equipment as well as a route and shipping line. A COC is supplied by the carrier. An SOC is supplied by the shipper or its representative. This affects the conditions of use, empty container return and the options for arranging the onward journey.

For deliveries to Ukraine, the distinction matters when the ocean leg is followed by a train from Gdańsk, extended unloading or use of the container at the consignee’s site. Assess the entire chain, from obtaining an empty container to its return, next shipment or sale.

What SOC and COC mean

COC stands for Carrier Owned Container: equipment supplied from the carrier’s fleet. The shipping line may own or lease it. What matters to the customer is that the line provides the equipment under its conditions for collection, use and return.

SOC stands for Shipper Owned Container. Purchasing it is not essential: the equipment may be leased separately or supplied by the cargo owner. The shipping line transports an accepted SOC but does not provide it from its own fleet.

This classification differs from choosing between FCL and LCL. FCL/LCL describe the container shipment format, while SOC/COC identify who provides the equipment. CY/CY and CY/CFS, in turn, concern the locations and format of cargo handover.

When a COC is more convenient

A COC is often convenient for a standard one-off shipment. The customer does not need to source a container separately, negotiate with its owner or plan its resale or reuse. Consider this option when the line confirms equipment availability, a suitable route and acceptable return conditions.

Before booking, establish the empty pickup location, permitted inland transport arrangements, free time and return depot. Confirm whether the equipment can be returned in Ukraine. A terminal near the consignee does not necessarily accept that shipping line’s empty containers.

For road container transport, include the agreed empty container movement alongside delivery of the cargo. After unloading, obtain confirmation that the correct depot has accepted the equipment. Check cleaning requirements and damage-related charges in advance as well.

When to consider a shipper-provided SOC

An SOC can be useful when the consignee needs the container for an extended period, plans to reuse it or faces a difficult return journey for a carrier-provided unit. It may also be an option when the selected line lacks equipment, provided SOC acceptance and vessel space are confirmed.

The advantage is greater control over sourcing the container and planning its subsequent use. That comes with purchase or lease costs, inspection, repairs, storage and repositioning. A leased SOC still carries obligations to the lessor, including return deadlines and locations.

Gdańsk to Ukraine by rail: where an SOC offers an alternative

Not every shipping line offers a suitable rail service from Gdańsk to Ukraine. An ocean connection to the Polish port does not establish that the same line can arrange a train to the required Ukrainian terminal. When planning container shipping through Gdańsk, resolve this before the cargo leaves its country of origin.

If the line does not offer the required rail service, an SOC can provide a useful alternative. The ocean leg is agreed with the shipping line and onward rail container transport with a separate operator. With the arrangement confirmed, the same container can be transferred to a rail wagon without unloading and reloading the goods themselves.

This option may also be available for a COC, subject to the line’s agreement. Confirm whether its equipment may travel to Ukraine with an independent operator, under what conditions and where the empty unit must be returned. If return outside Ukraine is required, include its cost and timing in the comparison.

An SOC reduces dependence on the shipping line’s equipment pool and return arrangements, but it does not override the line’s route restrictions. Before booking, confirm release for a separately arranged inland leg, acceptance by the rail operator, the destination terminal, permitted weight and the plan after unloading. Owning a container does not itself guarantee a rail departure.

Why an SOC does not eliminate every waiting charge

An SOC normally avoids the line’s charge for late return of its equipment because a different container is being used. Terminal storage, moves, handling and applicable local charges may still accrue. Charge names vary between tariffs; some rules also apply demurrage to SOC shipments.

The claim that an SOC eliminates all demurrage and detention is therefore too broad. When reviewing demurrage and detention, check what the charge covers, who invoices it and which period applies. For a leased container, separately account for daily rental, overdue return and the owner’s other conditions.

What to check before shipping an SOC

Technical condition and approval

Select a suitable container type and size, and check its identification number, tare, permitted weight and structural condition. Doors and locking gear must work, the floor must be suitable, and damage or contamination must not compromise transport safety or the goods.

Check the CSC plate and examination status: the next examination date or coverage under a valid Approved Continuous Examination Programme, ACEP. A metal plate alone does not establish that the container is fit for use. After a purchase, confirm whether the previous owner’s examination programme still applies.

Carrier acceptance and documents

Declare the shipment as SOC when requesting the rate. The line may request photographs, technical information, ownership details and examination documents. Check acceptance conditions separately for reefer, tank or non-standard equipment. One line’s confirmation does not replace agreement with other operators on the route.

Container particulars and shipment arrangements must match the booking and Bill of Lading. A packed SOC also requires VGM; ownership does not remove the applicable weight and loading requirements. If the container will remain in Ukraine or be sold there, agree on the customs treatment of the equipment with a broker in advance. Check insurance cover for the container separately from cargo insurance.

How to compare SOC and COC costs on the same route

Consider a hypothetical equipment shipment to Ukraine through Gdańsk, with rail as the preferred inland mode. First establish whether both options are feasible: a COC with authorised inland transport and return arrangements, or an SOC accepted by the shipping line and rail operator. Then compare the quotations.

For the COC, include ocean and inland transport, terminal operations, empty return and potential charges beyond free time. For the SOC, include the same necessary transport operations plus container purchase or rental, preparation and subsequent use or movement.

For a purchase, distinguish the initial cash requirement from the cost of using the container over the full period. Show potential resale proceeds separately, without assuming a buyer will necessarily be available. Equipment already owned still incurs maintenance and logistics costs. The ocean freight rate alone does not show the final difference.

Information needed to choose the container

1. Route: loading location, seaport and final address in Ukraine.

2. Cargo: commodity, weight, volume, dimensions and special requirements.

3. Inland leg: road or rail and the preferred destination terminal.

4. Equipment: container type, SOC availability and technical documents.

5. After unloading: return, reloading, storage space rental or further use.

6. Timing: cargo readiness date, expected unloading duration and how long the container is needed.

Plan the arrangement with Save Pro Solutions

Save Pro Solutions organises ocean container shipping with onward delivery to Ukraine in mind. Send the cargo specifications, route and preferred inland mode. For a route through Gdańsk, state whether rail is required so that the ocean service, container and rail operator can be checked for compatibility before booking.
