Therefore, a port’s role is determined not only by cargo volume but also by its location, the depth of its berths, terminal infrastructure, and connections to railways, highways, and inland waterways.

This is precisely why two ports located in the same country or near each other can serve different functions and are not entirely interchangeable.

The North Sea provides Europe with direct access to major ocean routes. This region is home to the continent’s largest general-purpose ports, through which containers, raw materials, vehicles, chemical products, and industrial equipment pass.
Rotterdam
Rotterdam is Europe’s largest seaport and one of the world’s most versatile logistics hubs. It handles container, liquid bulk, dry bulk, general cargo, and project cargo. Petroleum products, chemical raw materials, coal, ore, agricultural products, and equipment play a significant role.

Antwerp-Bruges

In a Save Pro Solutions case, a shipment of 12 containers was scheduled to be transported by rail through Polish ports. The containers were booked on a specific train, but the PIN codes required for their release were received after the agreed-upon deadline. As a result, part of the shipment missed the scheduled departure.
To keep the route on track, we had to quickly organize the transfer of containers between Gdynia and Gdańsk and coordinate the next rail shipment. The delay resulted in additional storage costs and demurrage.
This case illustrates an important practical point: even a large port with well-developed infrastructure does not in itself guarantee uninterrupted delivery. The outcome depends on the synchronization of the shipping line, the terminal, PIN codes, documents, transportation, and the rail slot. It is precisely these details that distinguish real port logistics from simply selecting a point on a map.
How a Port’s Role Affects the Logistics Chain
A large container hub offers a wide selection of shipping lines but may have high throughput and a complex terminal structure. A small regional port offers fewer services but sometimes provides a shorter overland leg or convenient handling of specific cargo.
Therefore, when organizing ocean container shipping, more than just the port’s name is taken into account. The arrival terminal, the type of vessel service, the facility’s specialization, the ability to process transit, and subsequent truck container transport or rail shipment are all important factors.
For cargo from Asia, the delivery route from China may run through the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, or the Black Sea. When moving goods between countries, it is necessary to determine in advance the point of release and the procedure for customs clearance in EU countries.
