Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or caustic soda, is a highly reactive chemical compound. The substance is used in industry in the form of granules, flakes or solutions of varying concentrations. It has strong alkaline properties, instantly reacts with moisture, forming an aggressive solution.

Caustic soda is characterized by high corrosiveness. In case of contact with skin or mucous membranes it causes serious burns, and in case of contact with eyes - the risk of damage to vision. Inhalation of vapors or dust of sodium hydroxide is also dangerous, as it can lead to burns of the respiratory tract. Therefore, storage and transportation of caustic soda require strict observance of safety measures.

Basic chemical properties of caustic soda

Alkalinity - it is one of the strongest bases, actively interacting with acids.
Hygroscopicity - the substance intensively absorbs moisture from the environment.
Corrosive activity - corrodes metals, some plastics and organic materials.
Solubility - dissolves in water with the release of heat, which requires special control during transportation.

Where is caustic soda used?

Caustic soda transportation in tank trucks
